Mae Ngai’s newest publication in the Atlantic, The Painful Afterlife of a Cruel Policy, tells the story of Fae Myenne Ng and her new historical memoir Orphan Bachelors, an aching account of the author’s family in San Francisco’s Chinatown at the tail end of the Chinese Exclusion era.
