Gary Okihiro (1945-2024), a foundational scholar of Asian American and Ethnic Studies, served as the founding director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER) from 1999 to 2007. He laid the groundwork for CSER to become Columbia’s only hub for comparative and interdisciplinary analyses of ethnicity, race, and indigeneity. This exhibit examines Okihiro’s life and legacy, the history of CSER, and the future of Ethnic Studies. Curated by Ari X (CC ’26) and Assistant Director, May Niiya, in consultation with Interim Associate Director Matt Sandler.
